International Accreditation Transition of Electrical Power Engineering Study Program from ABET to IABEE
Since 2018, the Electrical Power Engineering Study Program has been internationally accredited by ABET. The accreditation is valid for five years until September 29, 2023. ABET Accreditation is an accreditation agency under the signing of the Washington Accord (WA), which is a multilateral agreement that regulates the equality of independent accrediting institutions for study programs in the engineering field. Institutions under the WA agreement have their respective jurisdictions, but these institutions, including ABET, can accredit study programs outside their jurisdiction if there is no accreditation agency recognized by WA in the country where the study program is located. When the Electrical Power Engineering Study Program first applied for international accreditation, there was no international accreditation agency for engineering study programs with Indonesian jurisdiction, so the Electrical Power Engineering Study Program applied for accreditation to ABET.
In 2019, IABEE, an international accrediting agency for engineering study programs in Indonesia, was unanimously accepted as a Provisional Signatory Member for WA, so that WA’s jurisdiction over IABEE in Indonesia has been recognized since its establishment. To respect the jurisdiction of IABEE, the Electrical Power Engineering Study Program, in accordance with the direction of the Bandung Institute of Technology as the program managing institution, agreed to continue international accreditation through IABEE, no longer through ABET. The change of accreditation body used here does not reduce the quality assurance offered by the study program. This is because the two accreditation bodies are both under the WA agreement, which distinguishes only the jurisdictional areas of each accreditation body.
Currently, the IABEE accreditation process is being carried out by the Electrical Power Engineering Study Program. International accreditation from IABEE is expected to take effect from April 1, 2023. So that students who are active in the Electrical Power Engineering Study Program in the period April 1, 2023 – September 29, 2023 will experience double accreditation.
