Summer School Story in South Korea – Amirah Ayu Fahren

A student of Electric Power Engineering generation 2016, Amirah Ayu Fahren, has attended the summer school program in South Korea. The program was implemented in 5 weeks, from 11 July 2019 to 14 August 2019 at Chung-Ang University, Seoul, South Korea. Amirah participated in the Global Korean Scholarship for ASEAN Science and Engineering Students (GKS ASEAN) program. This program is a scholarship program from the National Institute for International Education under the Ministry of Education of South Korea in collaboration with 6 universities. Each university implements programs for different majors in the same time period.

“Since I start college, I have a dream to join the international student mobility program, like this 2019 ASEAN GKS program,” said Amirah. Chung-Ang University is devoted for Electrical Engineering and Informatics Engineering students; Kyunghee University is devoted to Mechanical and Civil Engineering students; as well as at 4 other universities. The program aims to introduce the atmosphere of studying in South Korea as well as to build friendly relations between ASEAN countries and South Korea.

There are selection processes that must be followed to be accepted into the ASEAN GKS program. The selection processes are divided into two, file selection process and interview. Things that need to be prepared in the file selection are motivation letters, research plans, active lecture certificates, letters of recommendation from lecturers, and letters of nomination from the International Office. About 3 weeks, the GKS will announce the participants who passed to the next stage. “Interviews are conducted via Skype within 30 minutes you must be able to explain who you are and present the research plan you have created. An official announcement will be sent via e-mail and if you are selected, congratulation you can going to medical checkup and making Korean visa! ” said Amirah.

Because the aim of this program is to introduce the atmosphere of learning in South Korea, for 5 weeks the participants will attend lecture classes which held from 09.00 – 12.00 and laboratory classes from 13.00 – 17.00. In addition, at the end of the program, each group is required to present their research whose the theme depends on the topic that brought by the university. In the last week, 180 participants from 6 universities will meet at one university to present the research results of each group.

This program is also filled with field trips every week, such as visiting landmarks in Seoul and partner institutions around Seoul. Amirah and the six representatives of Indonesia in GKS program had an opportunity to directly visit the Samsung and KIA Motor office.
